ALDO CHAPARRO

Statement

His work focuses on the use of sculpture and painting to explore form in post-industrial ways. Chaparro explores form through void, matter, and the human body using quick processes to transform prefabricated materials into unique objects. Using elements commonly used for construction, he creates forms in balance by manipulating and subtracting matter.

Resume

(1965)

Aldo Chaparro is a Peruvian-Mexican artist whose practice unfolds at the intersection of material experimentation and multiple creative fields. His trajectory spans curatorship, film, public art, architecture, industrial and editorial design, most notably through Celeste Editorial (Mexico, 2000–2014)—as well as music, sculpture, painting, and installation. This continuous movement across disciplines reflects an enduring inquiry into artistic processes and their relationship to broader cultural and social contexts. Rather than privileging the finished object or its position within the art market, Chaparro's work operates as a living record of transformation, dialogue, and process. His practice emerges from a direct, physical engagement with materials. Sculpture, painting, design, and architecture are approached not as separate disciplines, but as extensions of a single creative logic. Each work is constructed through sustained contact with matter, embracing its limitations, resistance, and inherent imperfections. Materials are selected not for their intrinsic value, but for what they permit—and what they deny.

Many pieces are resolved through weight, torsion, or wear, without the intention of fully correcting or concealing the process. Form arises as a consequence of persistence rather than refinement. Emptiness, reflection, and the relationship with space are recurring concerns. Mirrors and polished surfaces function not as mere finishes, but as active devices that incorporate the surrounding environment and implicate the viewer within the work itself. Rather than presenting themselves as final objects, the works operate as records of decisions, trials, and accepted errors. The practice resists a single, fixed interpretation, opening instead a space for experience-one in which matter, even in its fragility and transience, insists on enduring. Chaparro currently works from studios in Mexico (Mexico City, Valle de Bravo, and Monterrey), Peru (Lima), France (Paris), and Spain (Madrid and Carabanchel). Moving between these locations, his practice is shaped by place and context, fostering deeper, more personal connections with each city and its communities.
